Since 2003

Our story

Two brothers who built snake traps in the blackberries, a woman who fell for a degu in a pet shop, and a little store in downtown Newberg.

The Critter Cabana storefront on First Street, where it all started

Matt and Scott grew up in Brookings, Oregon, hauling plywood through the blackberry bushes to catch rubber boas. Brittani found her love for animals the day she watched a young degu bounding on its wheel in a pet shop. Matt and Brittani married, Scott moved out from Virginia, and when their local pet store announced it was closing, they decided to open one.

In the summer of 2003 they found the spot in historic downtown Newberg, and Critter Cabana opened. The family has since grown it to six neighborhood stores: Wilsonville, Tigard, Gresham, North Salem, South Salem and Critter Cabana.

We order for all six stores together, so we pay chain-store prices for the good food and pass that on to you. Then we run each store like it’s the only one, with a crew that knows its regulars and their pets.

We believe a good relationship between a person and a pet depends on the animal doing well. Helping with that, through good advice, good food and a good neighborhood store, is what we’re here for.
